Untold story of the tortured faces
Collection of works

Fairvale High School My artwork explores the forgotten past of the Khmer Rouge regime, a communist revolution which led Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. Over 1.5 million Cambodians died due to forced labour, starvation and execution. I was inspired by my mother's story of her experiences of the revolution and the hardship she faced during that time. She told me endless stories, each with a moral that taught me to appreciate my present life. I took influence from scrapbooking and created layers using different materials, including paper, fabric, metal embellishments and electrical wires. Scrapbooking is used to capture moment – a memory. I wanted to recapture the horrors Cambodia faced during the Khmer Rouge regime as it is an important aspect of history that is often forgotten.
