I was looking for something quirky and pop for my HSC artwork when I happened to see my favourite scene from Wayne’s World again. They were driving along, head-banging to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and basically acting like nerds. They are the sort of characters you would see out and about in Sydney and you’re struck by the contradictions between nerdiness and the wildness of Heavy Metal. It reinforces the idea that you can’t judge by appearances. They could be lovely guys or serial killers. I used a combination of Warhol-like, flat colours, then overlaid it with liquid paint I’d mixed. The final process was to add some accents with gestural brushstrokes (keeping in mind that less is more).
